A usually sweet dish eaten at the end of a meal. Synonyms are Dessert or Nachspeise.

The word is made up of 'Nach-' (after, afterward) and 'Tisch' (table). So it literally describes what comes to the table after the main meal.

In connection with 'Nachtisch' (dessert), two prepositions are used above all: 'zum Nachtisch' (for dessert, to express purpose) and 'als Nachtisch' (as dessert, to describe the function).

'die Süssigkeit' and 'der Nachtisch' can both be sweet, but they belong to different situations. 'Süssigkeiten' are small sweet things like chocolate, hard candies, or gummy bears. People eat them between meals, take them along, or buy them as a snack. 'Nachtisch' is a dish at the end of a meal, for example pudding, ice cream, or fruit salad. Learners may confuse the words because both can be sweet. The simple rule is: sweet things for snacking are called 'Süssigkeit', while sweet food after the main course is called 'Nachtisch'.
