nahen vs Tür

door

'vor der Tür stehen' and 'nahen' can both mean that an event is coming soon. 'Vor der Tür stehen' is a fixed expression and sounds natural in everyday language. 'Nahen' also means 'to draw near', especially in terms of time, but it sounds elevated or literary. In normal conversations, people usually say 'Die Prüfung steht vor der Tür' (the exam is just around the corner). 'Die Prüfung naht' is also understandable, but it sounds more formal or written.
