The strong desire to find out, learn, or discover something new. This interest can relate to knowledge, but also to other people's private affairs.

The word is made up of 'neu' (new) and 'Gier' (greed). So figuratively, it describes a 'Gier nach Neuem' (greed for new things), meaning the strong desire to discover something new.

'das Interesse' and 'die Neugierde' are closely related because in both cases you want to know or find out something. 'Interesse' is broader and often neutral: you engage with a topic, a person, or an offer. 'Neugierde' more strongly emphasizes the desire to find out something new or unknown. It can be positive, but it can also seem a bit too private if someone wants to know too much about others. Learners can easily confuse the words because curiosity can be a form of interest. For a topic, a course, or a product, people often say 'Interesse'. For the feeling 'I want to know what happens', 'Neugierde' fits better.
