The northernmost point on Earth, where the Earth's axis intersects the Earth's surface. It is located in the Arctic Ocean.

magnetic North Pole
The point on the Earth's surface toward which the needle of a compass points. This magnetic pole shifts over time and is not identical to the geographic North Pole.

The word is simply built from the compass direction 'der Nord' (the north) and 'der Pol' (the pole). It therefore refers to the pole that lies in the north.
