In Germany and Austria, a high court that stands above the regional courts and below the Federal Court of Justice or Supreme Court. It is mainly responsible for appeals and complaints against judgments from lower courts.

To describe the place of the hearing, the preposition 'an' with the dative is used: 'am Oberlandesgericht' (at the higher regional court). When taking action against a judgment, you 'ziehen vor' das Oberlandesgericht (bring the case before the higher regional court; accusative).

'das Landgericht' (regional court) and 'das Oberlandesgericht' (higher regional court) are both higher courts, but they are not at the same level. The 'Landgericht' is above the 'Amtsgericht' (local court). The 'Oberlandesgericht' is still above the 'Landgericht'. They can be confused because both have long names and both are not the lowest level. The order is useful in practice: 'Amtsgericht', 'Landgericht', 'Oberlandesgericht'. In appeals or complaints against decisions by lower courts, the 'Oberlandesgericht' can become important.
