A court of ordinary jurisdiction in Germany that stands above the local court and below the higher regional court in the hierarchy. It is responsible for civil and criminal cases of greater significance.

The word is composed of 'das Land' (the state/region) and 'das Gericht' (the court). So it literally refers to a court responsible for a particular region or federal state.

In a legal context, the prepositions are important. A hearing takes place 'vor dem Landgericht' (before the regional court). A lawsuit is filed 'beim Landgericht' (with the regional court). A case is referred 'an das Landgericht' (to the regional court).

Both courts decide civil and criminal cases in Germany. The Amtsgericht is usually responsible for less significant cases, while the Landgericht may be responsible for larger or more serious cases. Amtsgericht is therefore more appropriate for a smaller case, and Landgericht for a larger one.
