If you want to state the comparison explicitly, use 'als' (than) after 'öfter' (more often). Typical phrases include 'als früher' (than before), 'als sonst' (than usual), and 'als geplant' (than planned).
In diesem Winter bin ich öfter krank als sonst.
This winter, I have been ill more often than usual.
'Schon öfter' (several times before) is often used to talk about repeated experiences up to the present. The verb is often in the Perfekt (present perfect) tense; an explicit comparison is not necessary.
Ich habe schon öfter meinen Schlüssel zu Hause vergessen.
I have left my keys at home several times before.
In informal speech, 'öfter mal' (every now and then) works well in suggestions and wishes, especially with 'sollten' (should) or 'könnten' (could). It encourages doing something repeatedly without specifying a fixed schedule.
