A vegetable oil that is pressed from the flesh and pit of olives. It is used mainly for cooking and preparing food.
Für den Salat verwende ich am liebsten ein kaltgepresstes Olivenöl aus Griechenland.
For the salad, I prefer to use a cold-pressed olive oil from Greece.
The word is a simple compound made from 'die Olive' (olive) and 'das Öl' (oil). Its meaning is therefore directly understandable: oil from olives.

The component '-öl' (oil) is very productive in German. If you know it, you can understand many other cooking oils, such as 'Sonnenblumenöl' (sunflower oil), 'Rapsöl' (rapeseed oil / canola oil), or 'Kürbiskernöl' (pumpkin seed oil).

For frying, I usually use canola oil, not butter.
In the context of recipes and cooking, olive oil is often described with certain adjectives such as 'kaltgepresst' (cold-pressed) or 'nativ extra' (extra virgin). Typical verbs are 'verwenden' (to use), 'hinzugeben' (to add), or 'anbraten' (to sauté / fry briefly).
