orange vs gelb

yellow

'gelb' and 'orange' are both color words and are close to each other in the color spectrum. 'gelb' fits things like lemons, sunflowers, or ripe bananas. 'orange' lies between yellow and red and fits things such as oranges or pumpkins. They can be confused when a color is not completely clear, for example with clothing, light, or autumn leaves. Also important: as an adjective in German, 'orange' is normally not changed, so you say 'eine orange Tasche' (an orange bag), not 'eine orangee Tasche'.

Visual example for gelb

Für den Ausflug zieht Tom eine orange Jacke an.

Tom puts on an orange jacket for the trip.

gelb

Die Blätter am kleinen Baum vor dem Haus werden langsam gelb.
