A large group of musicians who play together on different instruments, such as string, wind, and percussion instruments, usually under the direction of a conductor.

Whether the group of musicians or the place in the theater is meant can usually be recognized from the verb. Verbs like 'spielen' (to play), 'proben' (to rehearse), or 'dirigieren' (to conduct) point to the musicians. Verbs like 'sitzen' (to sit) or 'Platz nehmen' (to take a seat) refer to the place.
Das Orchester spielt heute Abend Beethoven.
The orchestra is playing Beethoven tonight.
When referring to the group of musicians, you often hear: 'im Orchester spielen' (to play in the orchestra), 'ein Orchester leiten' (to lead/conduct an orchestra), or 'Mitglied eines Orchesters sein' (to be a member of an orchestra). The verb 'proben' (to rehearse) is also used frequently.

band
'die Band' and 'das Orchester' are both groups of musicians who play together. The most important difference is in size, musical style, and organization. A 'Band' is usually smaller and often plays pop, rock, or jazz. An 'Orchester' is usually larger, has many different instruments, and is often led by a conductor. The words can be confused because in both cases several musicians perform together. For a classical concert, however, you would more likely say 'Orchester'; for a rock group, 'Band' is more likely.
