The area in a theater or opera house that is located in front of and below the stage, where the musicians sit during a performance. Also called the orchestra pit.

Whether the group of musicians or the place in the theater is meant can usually be recognized from the verb. Verbs like 'spielen' (to play), 'proben' (to rehearse), or 'dirigieren' (to conduct) point to the musicians. Verbs like 'sitzen' (to sit) or 'Platz nehmen' (to take a seat) refer to the place.
