Oratorium vs Messe

fair / mass

'die Messe' and 'das Oratorium' can both be large sacred musical works with choir and orchestra. That is why they can easily be confused in music class or in concert programs. A 'Messe' sets fixed parts of the Catholic church service to music. An 'Oratorium' usually tells or deals with religious or dramatic content and is performed in concert form, without a theater stage. If it is about music for the text of the church service, 'Messe' fits. If it is more about a large narrative concert work, 'Oratorium' fits.

Visual example for Messe
Oratorium
