outen vs verraten

to reveal / betray

'verraten' and 'outen' can both mean that something private or secret becomes known. 'verraten' is very general: it can refer to any secret or confidential information. 'outen' is more specific. It often concerns sexual orientation or gender identity, and with 'jemanden outen' (to out someone), private information is made public without consent. Colloquially, you can also 'sich als Fan einer Sache outen' (reveal yourself as a fan of something) or 'sich mit einer Meinung outen' (openly admit to an opinion). The words can be confused because both have to do with revealing information. However, 'outen' only fits in certain personal or public contexts; 'verraten' is more neutral and can be used more broadly.
