The preposition helps distinguish the meanings. In a theater, you sit 'im Parkett' (in the stalls; dative). On the stock exchange and on a wooden floor, actions take place 'auf dem Parkett' (on the floor; dative).

When referring to flooring, 'Parkett' (parquet flooring) is often combined with the verb 'verlegen' (to lay/install). Adjectives that describe types of wood are also typical, for example 'Eichenparkett' (oak parquet flooring) or 'Buchenparkett' (beech parquet flooring).
Die Handwerker haben in der ganzen Wohnung neues Parkett verlegt.

You can recognize the meaning 'theater' from words like 'Bühne' (stage), 'Reihe' (row), 'Sitzplatz' (seat), 'Oper' (opera), or 'Karten' (tickets) in the same sentence.

The meaning 'stock exchange' belongs to the technical language of finance. It is often used metaphorically for all stock trading at a particular location.

'der Rang' and 'das Parkett' can both refer to seating areas in a theater, opera house, or concert hall. That is why they are easy to confuse. 'der Rang' is higher up, often on an upper level with a view of the stage. 'das Parkett' is downstairs on the ground floor, usually directly in front of the stage. The simple way to remember it is: Rang above, Parkett below.
