A large monkey with a long, dog-like muzzle and powerful canine teeth. Baboons mainly live in Africa and spend much of their time on the ground.

'Pavian' also appears at the end of animal names such as 'Mantelpavian' (hamadryas baboon) and 'Steppenpavian' (savanna baboon). These compounds refer to specific species of baboon.
