Peanuts vs Nuss

nut

'Nuss' and 'Peanuts' can both have to do with edible nuts. 'Nuss' is the normal German word and is general. 'Peanuts' is an English word that is sometimes used in German for Erdnüsse (peanuts), especially with snacks or on packaging. Colloquially, however, it can also mean a very small sum of money. Learners may confuse the words because 'Peanuts' can seem like a type of nut in some situations, but it does not generally mean 'nuts'. In normal German, 'Nuss' or, more precisely, 'Erdnuss' is usually clearer. 'Peanuts' fits better in casual language, with snacks, or in the meaning 'very little money'.
