pharmacy
The science concerned with the composition, effect, development, testing, production, and dispensing of medicines. It is also the name of the corresponding university degree program.
Nach dem Abitur entschied sie sich für ein Studium der Pharmazie.
After graduating from high school, she decided to study pharmacy.
'Pharmazie' refers to the science or field of study. The shop where you buy medicine is called 'die Apotheke' in German. The English word 'pharmacy' can mean both, which often leads to confusion.
Ich muss noch schnell in die Apotheke, um die Medikamente abzuholen.
I still have to quickly go to the pharmacy to pick up the medication.
'Die Pharmazie' (pharmacy) is the basis for other important words: A person who has studied pharmacy is 'der Pharmazeut' (the male pharmacist) or 'die Pharmazeutin' (the female pharmacist). The related adjective is 'pharmazeutisch' (pharmaceutical).
Ein Pharmazeut hat mich in der Apotheke beraten.
A pharmacist advised me at the pharmacy.
Die pharmazeutische Industrie investiert viel in die Forschung.
The pharmaceutical industry invests a lot in research.
Since 'Pharmazie' (pharmacy) is a field of study, it is very frequently used with the verb 'studieren' (to study). The combination 'ein Studium der Pharmazie' (a degree/course of study in pharmacy) is also very common.
Mein Bruder möchte an der Universität Pharmazie studieren.
My brother wants to study pharmacy at university.
