Prädikat vs Eigenschaft

characteristic / capacity

'die Eigenschaft' and 'das Prädikat' can both mean a characteristic that belongs to a person, thing, or idea. 'Eigenschaft' is the normal everyday word: you talk about the properties of a material, the characteristics of a person, or the features of a product. 'Prädikat' in this meaning is technical language and fits mainly in logic or philosophy, when a characteristic is attributed to a subject. Learners may confuse the words because 'Prädikat' is sometimes used like 'Eigenschaft'. In normal conversation, however, 'Eigenschaft' almost always sounds more natural. In addition, 'Prädikat' has other meanings, for example in grammar or as a quality seal.
