A verb tense in grammar that is mainly used to express present actions or states. It can also be used for future or generally valid statements.
Der Satz „Ich gehe ins Kino“ steht im Präsens.
The sentence “Ich gehe ins Kino” is in the present tense.
Although the Präsens (present tense) is the present form, it is used very often in German to talk about future events. Usually there is then a time expression in the sentence that points to the future.
Morgen fahre ich zu meinen Eltern.
Tomorrow I’m going to my parents’ place.
When talking about grammar, “Präsens” (present tense) is often used with fixed expressions. Typical ones are “ein Verb ins Präsens setzen” (to put a verb into the present tense), “ein Satz steht im Präsens” (a sentence is in the present tense), or “das Präsens verwenden” (to use the present tense).
