Word structure
The word is derived from the verb 'programmieren' (to program). The ending '-ung' turns the action of programming into a noun. Many German nouns ending in '-ung' are feminine and describe a process or its result.

Computer or sequence?
You can tell from the context whether it is about computers or general sequences. Words like 'Software' (software) or 'Code' (code) point to computers. Terms like 'Maschine' (machine) or 'Veranstaltung' (event) point to the planning of a sequence.

Typical collocations
In an IT context, 'Programmierung' is often combined with technical terms, for example 'objektorientierte Programmierung' (object-oriented programming) or 'funktionale Programmierung' (functional programming). 'Grundlagen der Programmierung' (basics of programming) is also a common expression.

'Planung' and 'Programmierung' can both refer to setting a sequence of events. 'Planung' is more general: you decide what should happen when, and how. 'Programmierung' fits in this similar sense when a program is set for an event, a broadcaster, or a machine. Very often, however, 'Programmierung' also means writing code on a computer. That is why 'Planung' is more natural for ordinary organization, while 'Programmierung' is more precise when it is about programs, sequences, or software.
