pusten vs blasen

to blow

'blasen' and 'pusten' can mean the same thing in many everyday situations: you push air out of your mouth, for example onto a candle or onto hot food. 'pusten' usually sounds more everyday and fits especially well when you deliberately blow air from your mouth onto something. 'blasen' is more general and can also be used for devices or strong wind. The words are therefore easy to confuse. In simple situations involving the mouth, both are often possible, but 'pusten' often sounds more natural and personal.
