'Rangordnung' is made up of 'Rang' (rank) and 'Ordnung' (order). The component 'Rang' shows the criterion on which the order is based: the position or importance of the individual members.

A person's or group's position is often described using 'in der Rangordnung' (in the hierarchy) and 'oben stehen' (to be at the top) or 'unten stehen' (to be at the bottom). Here, 'in' is used with the dative.
