Usage tips
Separable verb
'Raushalten' (to stay/keep out) is a separable verb. The prefix 'raus-' goes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
EXAMPLE
Ich halte mich aus diesem Streit komplett raus.
I am staying completely out of this argument.
Colloquial
The verb 'raushalten' (to stay/keep out) is used mainly in spoken language. The prefix 'raus' is a shortened form of 'heraus'. The more formal variant would be 'sich heraushalten' (to stay out).
EXAMPLE
Politik? Da halte ich mich lieber raus.
Politics? I'd rather stay out of that.
Reflexive with preposition
In the meaning 'sich nicht einmischen' (not to get involved), the verb is reflexive ('sich raushalten'). The matter one stays out of is connected with the preposition 'aus' and the dative.
EXAMPLE
Halte dich bitte aus meinen Problemen raus!
Please stay out of my problems!
Sentence structure with object
When you keep a person or thing away from something, the structure is: 'jemanden/etwas aus etwas (Dativ) raushalten' (to keep someone/something out of something). The accusative object is the person/thing that is meant to be protected.
EXAMPLE
Bitte halte den Hund aus der Küche raus.
Please keep the dog out of the kitchen.

raushalten vs einbeziehen
to include
'einbeziehen' and 'raushalten' can be opposites when it comes to involvement. When you 'jemanden einbeziehen', you let that person take part or inform them about something. When you 'jemanden raushalten', you make sure that the person is not involved. With 'sich raushalten', the person decides for themselves not to get involved. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with whether someone is involved in something. 'einbeziehen' means: into the matter. 'raushalten' means: stay outside or keep someone outside.
