Usage tips
Origin of the word
'Rave' is a loanword from English and is pronounced the same way in German. Since the 1990s, it has become established as a term for large parties with electronic music.
EXAMPLE

Techno culture brought the first big raves to Germany.
Typical collocations
Certain verbs are often used in connection with 'Rave' (rave). You say 'auf einen Rave gehen' (to go to a rave), and a party 'findet statt' (takes place) or is 'veranstaltet' (organized / held).
EXAMPLE
Gehst du am Samstag auch auf den Rave am See?
Are you going to the rave by the lake on Saturday too?
Typical locations
Raves often take place in unusual locations that were not built as classic clubs. Typical examples include old industrial buildings, forests, or open fields ('Open-Air-Rave' = open-air rave).

Rave vs Party
party
'die Party' and 'der Rave' both have to do with celebrating, music, and dancing. However, 'die Party' is much more general and can be private, small, or calm. 'der Rave' means a specific kind of dance event, usually large, long, and with electronic music such as techno. The words can be confused because a rave can also seem like a party. When it is about electronic music, nighttime, dancing, and often light effects, 'Rave' is more precise. For normal celebrations, you are more likely to use 'Party'.
Rave
Wir waren am Wochenende auf einem Rave und haben bis zum Morgen getanzt.
We went to a rave at the weekend and danced until morning.
Party
Bei den Nachbarn war gestern eine Party mit Essen und lauter Musik.
The neighbors had a party yesterday with food and loud music.
