In an economic context: to sell an asset (e.g., stocks, real estate) and convert it into money.
Der Investor musste einen Teil seiner Aktien realisieren, um liquide Mittel zu beschaffen.
The investor had to liquidate part of his stocks in order to obtain liquid funds.
Careful: 'Realisieren' has a double meaning. Like the English 'to realize', it can mean 'begreifen/verstehen' (to grasp/understand). Very often in German, however, it also means 'verwirklichen/umsetzen' (to make a reality/implement), which the English word does not mean in everyday use.
Sie will ihren Traum von einer Weltreise endlich realisieren.
She finally wants to realize her dream of traveling around the world.
Like all verbs ending in '-ieren', 'realisieren' forms its past participle without the prefix 'ge-'. The correct perfect tense form is 'hat realisiert' (has realized/implemented).
Ich habe erst jetzt das ganze Ausmaß des Problems realisiert.
Only now have I realized the full extent of the problem.
If a 'dass' clause follows, 'realisieren' usually means 'begreifen' (to grasp/realize). If a noun like 'Plan' (plan), 'Projekt' (project), or 'Traum' (dream) follows, it means 'verwirklichen' (to realize/make a reality).
Er realisierte, dass er einen großen Fehler gemacht hatte.
He realized that he had made a big mistake.
In the meaning 'verwirklichen' (to realize/make a reality), the verb is often combined with goals and ideas. Common nouns are 'ein Projekt' (a project), 'ein Plan' (a plan), 'eine Idee' (an idea), or 'ein Traum' (a dream).
Mit viel Engagement hat sie ihre Geschäftsidee realisiert.
With a lot of commitment, she realized her business idea.
to recognize / realize
Both words can refer to understanding a truth or a connection. erkennen emphasizes seeing or identifying the situation, while realisieren focuses more on becoming aware of it, often as a later or sudden insight. Use realisieren when awareness of the significance is the main focus.
Erst später realisierte ich, wie ernst die Zahlen waren.
It was only later that I realized how serious the figures were.
An den Zahlen erkannte ich den Zusammenhang sofort.
I immediately recognized the connection in the figures.
