The head of a Regierungspräsidium, an intermediate authority of state administration in some German federal states. He or she is responsible for implementing state laws and supervising the municipalities in their district.

The word is made up of 'Regierung' (government) and 'Präsident' (president). However, it does not refer to the president of a state or federal government, but to the head of a special administrative authority, the 'Regierungspräsidium' (regional administrative council / district government office).

'der Präsident' and 'der Regierungspräsident' sound similar and both refer to a high leadership role. However, 'Präsident' is a general title: it can mean the head of state of a republic or the head of an organization. 'Regierungspräsident' is a specific administrative title in some German federal states. A 'Regierungspräsident' heads a Regierungspräsidium and works in state administration. The risk of confusion comes from the word 'Präsident' in the longer title. Even so, a 'Regierungspräsident' is not simply the president of a state or club.
