The person who stands at the head of a state's government and leads government affairs. Depending on the country, this may be, for example, the chancellor, minister-president, or prime minister.

'der Präsident' and 'der Regierungschef' both belong to politics at the state level, but they describe different roles. In a republic, 'der Präsident' is the head of state. 'der Regierungschef' is the person at the head of the government and leads government affairs. Depending on the country, this may be a chancellor or prime minister, for example. The words can be confused because in some states one person may have a great deal of political power. Even so, the distinction is important: the head of state is not always the same as the head of government.
