In technology, the level of detail or sharpness of a digital image, a screen, or a print, often measured in pixels or DPI (dots per inch). Synonymous with 'Auflösung' (resolution).
example
Der neue Monitor hat eine sehr hohe Resolution und zeigt gestochen scharfe Bilder.
The new monitor has a very high resolution and displays razor-sharp images.
Usage tips
False friend
In German, 'Resolution' does not mean a personal resolution or intention, as in 'New Year's resolution'. For that, you use the word 'der Vorsatz' (resolution/intention).
EXAMPLE
Mein Vorsatz für das neue Jahr ist, mehr Sport zu treiben.
My resolution for the new year is to exercise more.
Context clues
The three meanings are clearly separated by context. Technical terms like 'Pixel' (pixels), 'Bildschirm' (screen), or 'DPI' point to image sharpness. Political terms like 'UN', 'Partei' (party), or 'Beschluss' (decision/resolution) point to a political decision. Musical terms like 'Akkord' (chord) or 'Dissonanz' (dissonance) point to music theory.
EXAMPLE
Stellen Sie die Resolution des Bildschirms höher ein.
Set the resolution of the screen higher.
Typical verbs
In a political context, 'Resolution' (resolution) is often combined with the verbs 'verabschieden' (to adopt), 'einbringen' (to introduce), 'vorschlagen' (to propose), or 'ablehnen' (to reject).
EXAMPLE
Mehrere Länder haben die Resolution gemeinsam eingebracht.
Several countries introduced the resolution together.
Typical adjectives
In a technical context, resolution is often described with adjectives such as 'hoch' (high), 'niedrig' (low), 'maximal' (maximum), or 'nativ' (native).
EXAMPLE
Für professionelle Bildbearbeitung braucht man einen Monitor mit hoher Resolution.
For professional image editing, you need a monitor with high resolution.

Resolution vs Entscheidung
decision
'die Entscheidung' and 'die Resolution' can both refer to a result that has been decided. 'Entscheidung' is very general: a person, a court, an authority, or a group can make an 'Entscheidung'. 'Resolution' is much more specific. It is a formal, usually written decision by a political or organizational assembly, for example a parliament or an international organization. The words can be confused because a 'Resolution' also contains a decision. But in everyday life or for personal choices, you do not say 'Resolution'; you say 'Entscheidung'.
Resolution
Die Versammlung hat eine Resolution gegen die geplante Kürzung verabschiedet.
The assembly adopted a resolution against the planned cut.
Entscheidung
Nach der Besprechung fällt die Entscheidung über den neuen Termin.
After the meeting, the decision about the new date is made.
