In tourism and sports, 'Saison' (season) is often combined with 'Haupt-' or 'Neben-' as in 'Hauptsaison' (high season) and 'Nebensaison' (low season/off-season). Common verbs are 'die Saison eröffnen' (to open the season) or 'die Saison beenden' (to end the season).

To express that a particular fruit or vegetable is currently ripe and being sold, you use the fixed expression 'Saison haben' (to be in season). The subject is the type of fruit or vegetable.

'die Saison' and 'die Staffel' are easily confused because the English word 'season' can touch on both ideas. In German, 'Saison' is a period of the year when something takes place, for example in sports, tourism, or culture. 'Staffel' is used for TV series to mean a complete set of episodes. So for a football team you say 'Saison', and for a series you say 'Staffel'. If you are talking about Netflix or a television series, 'Staffel' is almost always the right word.
