The word 'Schallplatte' (record) is a logical compound made up of 'der Schall' (sound) and 'die Platte' (flat disc/plate). So it is literally a 'sound disc'.

Although 'Schallplatte' (record) is the correct and complete word, in colloquial language it is very often shortened simply to 'die Platte' (the record). When someone talks about their 'Plattensammlung' (record collection), they mean records.

'die Platte' and 'die Schallplatte' can both mean a vinyl sound carrier on which music is stored. 'Schallplatte' is more precise and unambiguous. 'Platte' is shorter and sounds more natural in everyday language when the context makes it clear that you are talking about music. Without context, however, 'Platte' can also mean many other things, for example a flat piece of material or a serving platter.
