Schimpf vs Schande

shame / disgrace

'die Schande' and 'der Schimpf' can both have to do with dishonor or hurtful insult. 'Schande' is a normal word for something that is considered deeply shameful. 'Schimpf' actually means an insulting remark, but today it is rare and sounds more elevated or old-fashioned. The fixed expression 'Schimpf und Schande' is especially well known and means great public disgrace. The words can be confused because they appear together in this expression. In everyday language, however, people usually use 'Schande', not 'Schimpf'.
