The word consists of 'Schlüssel' (key) and 'Anhänger' (pendant/tag). An 'Anhänger' comes from the verb 'anhängen' (to attach/hang on) and is something that is attached to another object. So it is literally an “attachment for a key.”

But 'Anhänger' is much more general: it can be, for example, a piece of jewelry on a chain or a small tag on an object. 'Schlüsselanhänger' is more specific and refers only to the small object on a key ring. Learners may confuse the words because 'Schlüsselanhänger' contains the word 'Anhänger'. When it is about keys, 'Schlüsselanhänger' is more natural and more precise.
