'der Autor' and 'der Schriftsteller' are very close when it comes to literary texts. 'Autor' is broader and can also fit nonfiction books, articles, or academic texts. 'Schriftsteller' more often means a person who writes literary works, for example novels, poems, or essays, often as a profession. The words can be confused because a writer is always also the author of his or her texts. In practice: with a book, you can often say 'Autor'. If you want to emphasize the literary activity or the profession, 'Schriftsteller' sounds more natural.
