The noun 'die Selbstbeherrschung' (self-control) is closely connected with the reflexive verb 'sich beherrschen' (to control oneself). Both express a similar idea, but they are used in different sentence structures.

When remaining calm, both Beherrschung and Selbstbeherrschung refer to controlling your own feelings and reactions. Selbstbeherrschung makes the reference to the individual themself especially clear. Beherrschung is also appropriate here, but outside this context it can refer to other kinds of skill or control.
