The trait or act of judging one's own abilities, knowledge, or strength to be significantly greater than they actually are. This often leads to misjudgments and failures.

Überheblichkeit and Selbstüberschätzung can both show that someone judges themselves too positively. Überheblichkeit is mainly the clearly displayed attitude of being better or more important than others. Selbstüberschätzung, by contrast, concerns an inaccurate assessment of one's own abilities, even without arrogant behavior.
