'Skateboard' is a word borrowed directly from English. It is made up of 'skate' (to roll, glide) and 'board' (Brett — board) and is used the same way in German.

'Skateboard' is more specific: it has wheels and is used for riding or doing tricks. Learners may confuse the words because skaters often simply say 'Board' when it is clear that they mean a skateboard. Without clear context, 'Skateboard' is easier to understand. 'Board' sounds more natural when the context already shows which sport is meant.
