Usage tips
Origin and gender
'Spam' is a word from English that is also used in German. Pay attention to the gender: it is 'der Spam' (spam), masculine.
EXAMPLE
Der Spam in meinem Postfach wird immer mehr.
The spam in my inbox is getting worse and worse.
Uncountable noun
'Spam' is treated as an uncountable noun (mass noun) and is therefore almost always used in the singular. If you mean individual messages, you say 'eine Spam-Mail' (a spam email) or 'mehrere Spam-Mails' (several spam emails).
EXAMPLE
Ich habe heute schon wieder 50 Spam-Mails bekommen.
I've already received 50 spam emails again today.
Typical collocations
Common combinations are 'Spam bekommen/erhalten' (to get/receive spam), 'Spam löschen' (to delete spam), or 'als Spam markieren' (to mark as spam). Many email programs also have a 'Spam-Ordner' (spam folder) or a 'Spam-Filter' (spam filter).

Spam vs Newsletter
newsletter
'der Newsletter' and 'der Spam' are both electronic messages, often sent by email. The difference mainly lies in whether the message is wanted. You normally receive a 'Newsletter' because you subscribed to it and want information about a topic. 'Spam' is something you receive unwanted and often in large quantities, usually as advertising. The words can be confused because both end up in your inbox. The key point is: wanted regular information is a newsletter; unwanted mass advertising is spam.

Du solltest den Spam nicht öffnen, weil darin gefährliche Links sein können.
