Something that ranks first in a particular category, often in a statistical or even negative sense. This does not have to be a sports competition.

The word consists of 'Spitze' (top, peak) and 'Reiter' (rider). It paints the picture of someone who is “riding” at the top, meaning they are ahead of everyone else.

However, the Sieger is established as the winner after the competition has ended, while the Spitzenreiter may only be leading in the current standings. Sieger fits after the conclusion; Spitzenreiter fits while the competition is still in progress.
