A supraregional road that is the responsibility and property of a state. In Germany, it usually corresponds to a Landesstraße (state road; called Staatsstraße in Bavaria and Saxony), and in Switzerland to a Nationalstrasse (national road).
example
Wegen eines Unfalls ist die Staatsstraße 2025 derzeit komplett gesperrt.
Because of an accident, State Road 2025 is currently completely closed.
Usage tips
Compound word
The word is composed of 'Staat' (state) and 'Straße' (road/street). The 's' in the middle is a linking s that connects the two words. So it literally means a 'Straße des Staates' (road of the state).
EXAMPLE
Die neue Staatsstraße soll die Region besser anbinden.
The new state road is intended to connect the region better.
Regional use
The term 'Staatsstraße' (state road) is used mainly in the German federal states of Bavaria and Saxony. In most other federal states, the corresponding type of road is called 'Landesstraße' (state road).
EXAMPLE
Wenn Sie in Bayern unterwegs sind, sehen Sie oft Schilder für Staatsstraßen.
When you are traveling in Bavaria, you often see signs for state roads.
Typical context
'Staatsstraße' is often heard in traffic reports on the radio. Typical verbs in this context are 'gesperrt sein' (to be closed), 'befahren' (to drive on/use), or 'freigegeben werden' (to be reopened/released for traffic).
EXAMPLE
Die Staatsstraße 177 ist zwischen Radeberg und Leppersdorf gesperrt.
State Road 177 is closed between Radeberg and Leppersdorf.

Staatsstrasse vs Bundesstrasse
federal highway
'Bundesstraße' and 'Staatsstraße' can both refer to supraregional roads. The important difference is which system and which region the word is used in. A 'Bundesstraße' is a federal road in Germany or Austria and ranks below the Autobahn. 'Staatsstraße' is not used in the same way everywhere: in Bavaria and Saxony it usually corresponds to a 'Landesstraße' (state road), while in Switzerland it may be classified differently. The words are easy to confuse because both sound official and refer to larger roads. For Germany in general, 'Bundesstraße' is clearer if the road belongs to the federal government. 'Staatsstraße' fits especially when that is actually the regional term used.
Staatsstrasse
In Bayern ist diese Verbindung als Staatsstraße ausgeschildert.
In Bavaria, this connection is signposted as a state road.
Bundesstrasse
Nach dem Gespräch am Telefon fahren wir über die Bundesstraße weiter Richtung Süden.
After the phone conversation, we continue south on the federal highway.
