Staatsstrasse vs Bundesstrasse

federal highway

'Bundesstraße' and 'Staatsstraße' can both refer to supraregional roads. The important difference is which system and which region the word is used in. A 'Bundesstraße' is a federal road in Germany or Austria and ranks below the Autobahn. 'Staatsstraße' is not used in the same way everywhere: in Bavaria and Saxony it usually corresponds to a 'Landesstraße' (state road), while in Switzerland it may be classified differently. The words are easy to confuse because both sound official and refer to larger roads. For Germany in general, 'Bundesstraße' is clearer if the road belongs to the federal government. 'Staatsstraße' fits especially when that is actually the regional term used.
