Usage tips
Word family
A person who receives a scholarship is called 'der Stipendiat' or 'die Stipendiatin' (scholarship holder). These words are derived directly from the word 'Stipendium' (scholarship).
EXAMPLE
Als Stipendiatin der Stiftung konnte sie sich voll auf ihre Forschung konzentrieren.
As a scholarship holder of the foundation, she was able to focus fully on her research.
Typical verbs
Certain verbs are often used in connection with 'Stipendium' (scholarship). You can 'sich um ein Stipendium bewerben' (apply for a scholarship), 'bekommen' (get) one, or 'erhalten' (receive) one. An organization can 'ein Stipendium vergeben' (award a scholarship).
EXAMPLE
Er hat sich um ein Stipendium für sein Masterstudium beworben.
He applied for a scholarship for his master's degree.
Correct preposition
To indicate the purpose of the scholarship, the preposition 'für' (for) followed by the accusative is used. This describes what the financial support is intended for.
EXAMPLE
Ich habe ein Stipendium für einen Sprachkurs in Spanien bekommen.
I received a scholarship for a language course in Spain.

Stipendium vs Unterstützung
support
'Unterstützung' and 'Stipendium' can both mean financial help. But 'Unterstützung' is much more general: it can be money, but also practical or moral help. 'Stipendium' is more precise when someone receives money for education, university studies, art, or research and normally does not have to pay it back. So if you are talking about help in general, you say 'Unterstützung'. If it is about fixed funding for learning or research, 'Stipendium' is more natural.
Stipendium
Lisa hat ein Stipendium bekommen und kann nun ein Jahr in Berlin studieren.
Lisa received a scholarship and can now study in Berlin for a year.
Unterstützung
Ohne die finanzielle Unterstützung meiner Eltern könnte ich den Sprachkurs nicht bezahlen.
Without my parents' financial support, I would not be able to pay for the language course.
