'Unterstützung' and 'Stipendium' can both mean financial help. But 'Unterstützung' is much more general: it can be money, but also practical or moral help. 'Stipendium' is more precise when someone receives money for education, university studies, art, or research and normally does not have to pay it back. So if you are talking about help in general, you say 'Unterstützung'. If it is about fixed funding for learning or research, 'Stipendium' is more natural.
