Certain verbs are often used in connection with 'Zuschuss' (subsidy/grant): you can 'beantragen' (apply for), 'bekommen' (get), or 'erhalten' (receive) a subsidy. An institution can 'gewähren' (grant/provide) or 'zahlen' (pay) a subsidy.

'die Unterstützung' and 'der Zuschuss' can both mean financial help. However, 'Unterstützung' is more general: it can be money, but also help through time, advice, or cooperation. 'Zuschuss' always means a specific amount of money that is paid in addition, so that costs can be paid more easily. The words can be confused when talking about money. If you only mean help in general, use 'Unterstützung'. If you mean a specific amount of money, 'Zuschuss' is more precise.
