The word consists of 'der Streit' and 'die Macht'. Here, 'Streit' does not mean 'conflict' or 'quarrel', but comes from the old word for 'battle'. So a 'Streitmacht' (armed force) is literally a 'battle force'.

Armee can generally mean a country's military forces, especially its Heer, or a specific large military formation. Streitmacht can likewise refer to a country's military forces as a whole or to a large organized unit. When all branches are explicitly meant together, Streitmacht is less ambiguous; Armee remains more general and can be understood more narrowly.
