'Studentenausweis' (student ID card) consists of 'Studenten' (students) and 'Ausweis' (ID card). The first part indicates the group of people the ID card is intended for.
Auf meinem Studentenausweis stehen mein Name und meine Hochschule.
My name and university are printed on my student ID card.
Typical collocations are 'einen Studentenausweis beantragen' (to apply for a student ID card) and 'einen Studentenausweis ausstellen lassen' (to have a student ID card issued). The student applies for the document, while the university issues it.
Wenn du deinen Studentenausweis verloren hast, kannst du bei der Hochschule einen neuen beantragen.
If you have lost your student ID card, you can apply for a new one at the university.
In offers for students, you will often see 'gegen Vorlage des Studentenausweises' (upon presentation of the student ID card). 'Vorlage' is followed by the genitive here; the construction states that showing the ID card is a condition.
Gegen Vorlage des Studentenausweises erhalten Sie an der Kinokasse einen Rabatt.
Upon presentation of your student ID card, you will receive a discount at the cinema ticket counter.
