Substantiv vs Subjekt

subject

'Subjekt' and 'Substantiv' are both words from grammar, but they do not describe the same thing. A 'Subjekt' is a part of a sentence and says who or what does something in the sentence or is in a certain state. A 'Substantiv' is a part of speech, for example a word for a person, thing, or idea. The words can be confused because a subject often consists of a noun. But a noun is not automatically the subject of a sentence. For the subject, ask: 'Wer oder was?' (Who or what?) For the noun, the question is more like: 'What part of speech is this?'
