The word is a clear compound of 'suchen' (to search) → 'Suche' (search) and 'Maschine' (machine). So it literally describes a machine used for searching.
Die Entwicklung von Suchmaschinen hat das Internet revolutioniert.
The development of search engines revolutionized the internet.
Common verbs used with 'Suchmaschine' (search engine) are 'benutzen' (to use), 'verwenden' (to use), or 'nutzen' (to use). You can also say 'etwas in die Suchmaschine eingeben' (to enter something into the search engine) or, colloquially, 'die Suchmaschine fragen' (to ask the search engine).
Welche Suchmaschine benutzt du am liebsten?
Which search engine do you like using most?
Pay attention to the case after the preposition 'in': You enter a search term 'in die Suchmaschine' (into the search engine, accusative), but you find a result 'in der Suchmaschine' (in the search engine, dative).
Ich habe die Adresse in der Suchmaschine nicht gefunden.
I didn't find the address in the search engine.
