'die Sprache' and 'die Syntax' can easily be confused because both have to do with rules. 'Sprache' means the whole system, that is, words, grammar, and other rules. This applies to natural languages and also to programming languages. 'Syntax' means only the structure of sentences or commands, in other words, how parts are put together correctly. A useful reminder: syntax is part of a language, not the whole language.
