The very first page of a newspaper, magazine, or book, where the title and often the most important headlines or information appear.

'Titelblatt' is made up of 'Titel' (title) and 'Blatt' (sheet/page). Here, 'Blatt' means 'page', so it is literally the page on which the title appears.

Pay attention to the difference with the preposition 'auf': a news item is 'auf dem Titelblatt' (on the front page; dative, location), but a person 'schafft es aufs Titelblatt' (makes it onto the front page; accusative, direction).

The headline appeared in large print on the front page.
Common phrases are 'es aufs Titelblatt schaffen' (to make it onto the front page; to become very famous/important) and 'das Titelblatt zieren' (to appear on/adorn the front page).

'Titelblatt' puts more emphasis on the first page with the title, headlines, or important information. For newspapers, 'Titelblatt' sounds very natural. For books, it can also mean the page with the title and author. The words can be confused because both are at the front. For design and the external effect, 'Cover' fits.
