Triassic
A geological period that took place about 252 to 201 million years ago and represents the first system of the Mesozoic Era. The first dinosaurs developed during this time.

The word 'Trias' comes from the Greek word for 'three'. All meanings refer to a unit consisting of three parts—whether a group, a combination of symptoms, or an epoch that is itself divided into three sections.

You can recognize the meaning of 'Trias' from the context: words like 'Dinosaurier' (dinosaurs) or 'Erdzeitalter' (geological age) point to geology (m01). In a medical context, 'Symptom' (symptom) or 'Krankheit' (disease) indicates the symptom group (m03). In other fields, it is usually about a general triad (m02).

'das Syndrom' and 'die Trias' can both refer to a group of signs of illness in medicine. The important difference is the number and the focus. A 'Syndrom' is a typical joint occurrence of several symptoms; there do not have to be exactly three. A medical 'Trias', on the other hand, consists of exactly three characteristic symptoms. Learners may confuse the words because both are used for illnesses with several symptoms. As a guide: when there are exactly three related signs, 'Trias' fits; when it is a whole typical clinical picture, 'Syndrom' is more appropriate.
