Trope vs Motiv

motive / motif

'das Motiv' and 'die Trope' can both mean something recurring in stories, films, or art. 'Motiv' is broader and more neutral: it can be a theme, an idea, or a repeated element, for example travel, jealousy, or a particular image. 'Trope' is used more in media and cultural criticism when referring to a familiar pattern in films or books. A trope often feels conventional or even like a cliché. The words can be confused because both talk about repeated elements. In practice: in a normal analysis, 'Motiv' usually fits better; for well-known narrative patterns or clichés, 'Trope' is more precise.
