Usage tips
False friend
Careful: 'Typhus' in German is not the same as 'typhus' in English. The German word 'Typhus' refers to the disease called 'typhoid fever' in English. The English 'typhus' is 'Fleckfieber' in German.
EXAMPLE
Vor Reisen in bestimmte Länder wird eine Impfung gegen Typhus empfohlen.
Before traveling to certain countries, vaccination against typhoid fever is recommended.
Use with article
As with many disease names, 'Typhus' is often used without an article when saying that someone has the disease. When speaking about the disease in general, the article 'der' is used.
EXAMPLE
Früher starben viele Menschen an Typhus.
In the past, many people died of typhoid fever.
Typical collocations
In connection with the disease, certain verbs are common: 'an Typhus erkranken' (to fall ill with typhoid fever), 'Typhus haben' (to have typhoid fever), 'sich mit Typhus infizieren' (to become infected with typhoid fever), or 'gegen Typhus geimpft sein' (to be vaccinated against typhoid fever).
EXAMPLE
Auf seiner Weltreise hat er sich mit Typhus infiziert.
On his trip around the world, he became infected with typhoid fever.

Typhus vs Cholera
cholera
'die Cholera' and 'der Typhus' are both serious infectious diseases that are often transmitted through contaminated water or food. That is why learners can easily confuse them. The important difference lies in the disease itself: with cholera, severe diarrhea and vomiting are especially prominent. Typhoid fever is primarily a serious feverish illness. In normal conversations, you should not use the words interchangeably because they refer to different diseases medically.

Vor der Reise fragt Maria ihre Ärztin, ob sie sich gegen Typhus impfen lassen soll.
