The cat crept into the kitchen unnoticed and stole the fish.
The word has a simple structure: it consists of the prefix 'un-', which expresses negation, and 'bemerkt', the past participle of 'bemerken' (to notice). 'Unbemerkt' therefore literally means 'not noticed'.

His disappearance initially went unnoticed.

Heimlich indicates that an action is deliberately meant to be hidden from others. Unbemerkt, by contrast, only describes the fact that nobody notices it, without expressing such an intention. Use heimlich when secrecy is planned and unbemerkt when only the lack of awareness matters.
